Yorkie diseases and problems

The Yorkshire terrier is a very healthy dog which has an average life span of thirteen to 16 yrs which is a lot more than most breeds of dog large or small. Nonetheless, they have a few genetic problems which are common amongst the breed.

Yorkie Terriers and Portosystemic shunt - This is a condition in which the Portal vein carrying impure blood is defective, permitting pure and impure blood to be mixed. This leads to problems in the circulatory system. The blood supplied to the organs will get more toxins when compared to oxygen. The dog will become listless and lethargic. Non detection of this issue will lead to serious brain harm. The only way to correct this issue is via surgery. As this disorder is seen in very young dogs itself, your vet will most definitely have the ability to detect it before it becomes serious.

Tracheal collapse - In this condition the walls of the trachea progressively get weaker till they collapse. The dog usually finds it very hard to breathe, progressing to lung damage and eventually death. The reason behind this issue isn't known for sure although there is every chance that it's due to the jerk when on a leash. The dog is a very small one and the muscles of its neck aren't strong enough to take the strain. Using a harness helps here. A common indicator of this situation is repeated coughing. The problem will progress as the age of the dog increases making breathing more and more challenging. If detected early, medicine is enough to treat this condtion, whilst if delayed your canine might need to go through surgery.

Hypoplasia of dens - This really is yet another genetic abnormality in Yorkie Terriers wherein, the pivot joint of the second cervical vertebra does not form. This eventually causes spinal damage and its symptoms vary based on the severity of the condition. This is a problem which can happen anytime and there is no treatment for it.
